Tamper No. 5 was acquired from Translink/NI Railways in 2022 at the same time as the VMT and some Irish Rail ballast hoppers and plough van.

This machine was last used by NIR on the Derry/Londonderry relay project, and was stored at Ballymena for a number of years, before being offered to DCDR in 2022. In much better condition than our existing tamper No. 7, this has been under constant mechanical restoration by our small, dedicated team since late 2022, and in late 2023 it is close to making its first test runs. It will be essential for keeping our main lines in good condition, with most work currently being undertaken by hand.
