What’s better than steam trains? What about FREE STEAM TRAINS!

It’s full steam ahead this St Patrick’s Day as we are running an afternoon of completely free trains on Friday 17th March.

As part of the wider celebrations in Downpatrick, we will be running steam trains from 12:00 to 16:30 from our station in Market Street out to Inch Abbey.

There’s storytelling from Mourne Story Tellers and musicians and traditional dancing to enjoy. We will also teach you to make butter the old-fashioned way, and you can try it out on freshly-made soda bread, just like the monks did in the past. You will also learn the skill of making honey, with real bees in a real hive (safely behind glass!).

It’s only a short walk from our station to the Cistercian monastery of Inch Abbey, where you can explore the historic ruins – and imagine you are in Game of Thrones too!

Our carriage gallery and museum will be open, where you can see everything from carriages and locomotives to old tickets and timetables. Hot drinks and nibbles are on sale in the buffet train at Inch Abbey.

Advanced booking is not required but spaces will be allocated on a first come basis on the day.

This event is being run with the support of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
