27350 is one of a large batch of 22ft long, 2 axle, container flats built by CIÉ’s Inchicore Works in the 1970s. Part of the 27300 series, these differed from earlier batches, being designed to carry 8’6″ high containers. Earlier designs were unable to carry these within the Irish loading gauge limits. The 27300 series had a lower floor height to allow for this. In addition to carrying standard ISO containers, they were also used to carry cages of Guinness kegs across Ireland.
By the 2000s, Iarnród Éireann had begun to phase out much of its 4-wheeled wagon stock, with liner trains now using bogie vehicles almost exclusively for container traffic.. While the vast majority of the fleet were scrapped, 27350, along with sister vehicle 27427, managed to escape. The pair lay out of use in the yard at Enfield, on the Dublin to Sligo line, for many years. In recent years, they were acquired for preservation by a private individual. In 2026, this individual donated the wagons to our railway, with 27350 arriving on 7th July 2026.
