80 Class restoration update: welding

A further update on the restoration of our 80 class railcar set. Our new volunteer Harrison has been getting stuck in on his first day at Downpatrick by carrying out welding repairs on 1978-vintage ex-Northern Ireland Railways 80 class power car 69. At almost 50 years of age, the ducts that carry air to cool the traction motors were in desperate need of some TLC. We’re extremely lucky to have so many young volunteers, who will keep our railway running for generations to come.

Our 80 class railcar restoration project is now in its final stages, but there’s still things to do for anyone wishing to join the project (the more the merrier).

If you like big oily engines, getting your hands dirty, and rewarding, hands-on work, then we might be just the community for you. Find out about our volunteering opportunities here  – no engineering experience required.

Another way to support the 80 class project is through donations, any amount, large or small, is appreciated. You can make a donation here.

We look forward to the day (and it is approaching) when can run our 80 class railcar down the line, with its iconic ‘Thumper’ sound permeating the Down countryside. You can help us make that happen.
