Over the past several months, our volunteers have been working hard on preparing GSWR tank engine No. 90 for its 10-year boiler overhaul. This involves dismantling the loco prior to sending the boiler to a contractor. We also need to inspect and carry out work on the frames, bearings, and valve gear.
With the cladding, auxiliaries, and ashpan removed, our Steam Team has recently turned its attention to the smokebox. In here is the pipe which brings steam from the boiler to the cylinders, as well as the bolts which connect the boiler to the frames.
To say that this is an awkward task is an understatement. All of the nuts and bolts were stuck fast due to years of smoke and rust. Several of them were buried under concrete. (Concrete is used to create an airtight seal between the smokebox and the frames). After weeks of tireless hammering, spannering, and chiselling, our volunteers are on the cusp of finally disconnecting 90’s boiler.
Meanwhile, we’ve also been in discussions with specialist contractors to get quotes and to arrange for the boiler work itself to be carried out. More details on this to follow…
