A roof over our heads

We’ve got a roof over our heads! At long last, the Maghera Shed locomotive shed is (mostly) watertight, the first time since before Storm Ciaran and the floods.

C Mason Steelwork have been working diligently over the last few weeks. They have been dealing with nice rotten surprises and fussy railway volunteers. However, the smoke from the locomotives seems to have pickled the timbers into giant truss kippers, so thankfully they were sound.

The contractors have fitted a cement fibre roof to the shed, in a slate grey finish. This not only looks more in keeping with the historic building, but is also much more resistant to the exhaust fumes from steam and diesel locomotives.

The contractors are now practically finished with their work. They just need to install the new ridge ventilation system and the end window. This means our volunteers can practise with the new hot pressure washer to sort out the floor and walls.

Are you a painter? We’d love to hear from you about getting the walls sorted before we start putting locomotives back in.
