This past weekend saw Niall and Robert continue to fit out the passenger compartment of 80 class power car 69, including the fitting of reupholstered seat cushions, resembling the original 80 class railcar seating as it was back in the 1970s.
69’s windows were removed over two years ago to repair about 40 years’ worth of bodywork rust underneath, and last week was finally the time to put them back in. After spending many hours scrubbing dirt from the aluminium surrounds, all of the windows were carefully lifted into place using special suction cups.
Our volunteers have also been assembling 69’s seat frames after they were shot-blasted and powder-coated. Unfortunately not everything fits quite right the first time, so it often takes a lot ofz clamping, and screwing before they’re ready to be fitted with cushions. We’ve re-covered 69’s seats with original “Bournemouth Blue” moquette. All the seat frames have now been refitted and while there is still some upholstery left to fit, already we seeing the vehicle start to evoke that retro feel, with the original 80 class railcar seating being a key factor here.
It’s been a long, long journey, but with each passing week progress is increasing and the day is not far before passengers can once travel in retro1970s’ style modernity when our 80 class emerges from the workshop.
If you would like to contribute towards the restoration of the 80 class, you can donate to our appeal here. All amounts, small or large, are gratefully received.
