IRSE Irish Section visit Downpatrick

Last Thursday we played host to a visit from the IRSE (the Institute of Railway Signal Engineers), Irish Section. Our chairman, Robert Gardiner, gave an overview of our railway’s story over the past 40 years, following which our Chief Civil Engineer, David Crone, discussed our future signalling plans and how we propose to achieve them.

Sean Burns, retired Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail Signalling Engineer, gave an interesting talk on how modern railway signalling principles stemmed from the Armagh disaster of 1889. Over a decade ago, Sean had assisted us with recovering materials from the East Cork resignalling project, and the lever frame from Tralee, and it was good to show him how we have put them to good use.

Nigel Taylor, Translink Telecoms, presented on developing his team’s compentencies.

Matt Taylor of AMC Training & Consultancy Ltd and Gordon Bruce from BK3 Training spoke about proposed developments including a plan to develop an independent, specialised, training school, which would be the first of its kind on the island of Ireland.

Special mention also to Clare Crooks of Translink for putting the programme together.

We hope IRSE members enjoyed their day and we look forward to welcoming them again in the future.
