This winter, our museum’s volunteers are laying our first entirely new section of railway track since 2015, as we’ve had nearly a decade of just minor adjustments and relays.
Believe it or not, despite being there since 2012, the second track in our ‘new’ loco shed was never actually connected to the rest of our heritage railway, effectively isolated. That’s finally about to change, however, as our volunteers set to work laying a new connection.
In order to install this new connection, we have (temporarily) lifted some of the existing siding to the shed. This is so that we can install a new set of points for the siding. The timbers for these points actually came from Translink’s old Belfast Great Victoria Street station which closed in 2024. Thus, a little piece of modern Northern Ireland railway heritage has been preserved and will continue to play a useful role on our heritage railway.
There is still much left to do, but we’ve already made wonderful process with this small extension. If you would like to help, email us about volunteering today at info@downrail.co.uk.
