The Gin Express at the award-winning Downpatrick & County Down Railway is a first class day out not to be missed. As you board the authentic 1950s carriages you will be transported back in time to the golden age of steam, and what better way to indulge in that nostalgia than with a drink that typified a bygone age?

Summer events at DCDR are supported by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

What happens during my visit?

Your train departs from Downpatrick station at 1:45pm, 2:30pm or 3:15pm. You will have some time before and after your gin express train to look around the station, museum and carriage gallery if you wish.

Your heritage steam train journey will leave Downpatrick station transporting you through some beautiful countryside before arriving at Inch Abbey station. On arrival, you will “change trains” to our buffet train, where you will be served four exclusive top Irish gins for you to sample with various tonics and garnishes. These include the totally unique Dingle gin and Bonac 24, whose name is taken from a place, and a people, “that dare to be different”.

Accompanying you on your gin tasting experience will be our gin enthusiast who will serve and talk you through the specific characteristics and processes used for each gin, always on hand to answer any questions and make sure your journey is a special experience.

Toilet facilities are available at our Inch Abbey station but these are not accessible. Full accessible toilets are available at our Downpatrick station.

The steam train and buffet train are all fully wheelchair accessible. Please see this page for more details.
