Meet the Edwardians

Step back to the Edwardian era at this European Heritage Open Day weekend as the last summer train pulls out of the station.

We are running our last trips of the summer to Inch Abbey this weekend, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September, as part of the European Heritage Open Days, and in the spirit of Province-wide scheme there will be guided tours on request of the lesser seen parts of the railway site not normally accessible to the public, as well as the chance to sample the atmosphere of rail travel at its most traditional.

Summer events at DCDR are supported by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Dates and times: Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September 2019

Doors open at 12:30pm, and trains depart from 1pm to 4pm.

What happens during my visit?

Trains depart Downpatrick station at: 1:00pm, 1:45pm, 2:30pm, 3:15pm and 4:00pm. For this Edwardian Weekend, we re using our unique vintage set of carriages, all of which are over 100 years old.

Step back in time and share their compartments with Edwardian ladies and gentlemen, whilst on the platform a typical ‘Flower lady’ as well as a storyteller will be milling about the station.

Free guided tours of our workshop and main signal cabin are also being provided as part of the Heritage Weekend.

On Saturday 14th only, storytelling monks will be at Inch Abbey itself to tell the story of the monastery – this is a short walk from our station at Inch Abbey.

The steam train, stations and buffet train are all fully wheelchair accessible. Please see this page for more details.
